How to rate competencies
Last updated: 7 May 2026
What this does
Rate team members on their assigned competencies. Ratings come from peers, managers, or self-assessments and feed into the competency dashboard and IPA scoring.
Current access and functionality
- Verified against the current
impact-web,impact-client, andimpact-marketplacecode on 2026-05-07. - In
impact-web, users must be signed in and working in an active workspace. Navigation and write actions are role-, permission-, and entitlement-aware; unavailable modules are hidden or disabled instead of being universally visible. - Performance and people analytics depend on workspace roles and available data. Setup is primarily web-based; staff visibility is limited to their own or permitted team/member views.
Before you start
- Competencies must be created and assigned to members (see ).
- You must be assigned as a rater or have permission to rate.
Steps
Rating a team member
- Navigate to the Competency section.
- Select a competency or go to a member's competency profile.
- Find the member you want to rate.
- Click Rate on the competency tile.
- Select your rating based on the defined rating type (e.g., a numerical score or proficiency level).
- Submit the rating.
- The rating is recorded with your identity and a timestamp for audit purposes.
Viewing ratings
- Open a member's competency profile to see all their ratings.
- Each competency shows:
- Current rating — the latest assessment.
- Rater — who provided the rating.
- Date — when the rating was given.
- Use the competency dashboard to see aggregated views:
- Affirmation view — shows how ratings align with expectations.
- Graded view — shows proficiency levels across competencies.
Tips
- Rate based on observed behaviour, not assumptions. Use specific examples when possible.
- Regular ratings (quarterly or after major projects) give better data than annual reviews.
- Self-assessment combined with manager assessment provides a more balanced picture.
- Ratings directly influence IPA scores — be fair and consistent.
- Use the bench depth view after rating rounds to see how the organisation's skill profile has changed.
Common issues
- Issue: Cannot rate a member — Fix: Check that the competency is assigned to them and you have rating permissions.
- Issue: Rating does not appear on the dashboard — Fix: The dashboard may aggregate ratings on a schedule. Wait for the next refresh or check filters.
