How to use project dashboards and burndown charts

Last updated: 7 May 2026

What this does

Monitor project health using dashboards and burndown charts. See at a glance how many tasks are complete, whether the project is on schedule, and where bottlenecks are forming.

Current access and functionality

  • Verified against the current impact-web, impact-client, and impact-marketplace code on 2026-05-07.
  • In impact-web, users must be signed in and working in an active workspace. Navigation and write actions are role-, permission-, and entitlement-aware; unavailable modules are hidden or disabled instead of being universally visible.
  • Project creation and management are available to company admins, owners, project coordinators, and project managers according to the permission matrix. Project members may only see assigned or permitted project content.

Before you start

  • You must have an existing project with tasks.
  • Tasks should have dates and statuses set for the charts to be meaningful.

Steps

Viewing project statistics

  1. Open the project.
  2. Go to the Statistics or Dashboard tab.
  3. View key metrics:
    • Task breakdown — how many tasks are in each status (not started, in progress, completed).
    • Stage distribution — how many tasks are in Action, Verify, or Accept stages.
    • Completion percentage — overall project progress based on completed tasks.
    • Overdue tasks — tasks that have passed their expected end date.

Using the burndown chart

  1. From the project view, open the Burndown section.
  2. The burndown chart shows:
    • Ideal line — the planned rate of task completion based on baseline dates.
    • Actual line — the real rate of task completion over time.
  3. If the actual line is above the ideal line, the project is behind schedule. If it is below, the project is ahead.
  4. Use milestone burndowns to track progress toward specific milestones.

Custom dashboards

  1. Navigate to the Dashboard section.
  2. Add project-related widgets:
    • Task List — filtered views of tasks by status, assignee, or priority.
    • Project health — visual indicators of schedule and scope health.
  3. Configure widgets to show the data most relevant to your role.

Tips

  • Check the burndown chart weekly to catch schedule slippage early.
  • A flat actual line means no tasks are being completed — investigate whether tasks are blocked or resources are overallocated.
  • Use the task breakdown to identify bottleneck stages. If many tasks are stuck in Verify, it may mean reviewers are overloaded.
  • Share dashboard views with stakeholders for status updates instead of writing manual reports.

Common issues

  • Issue: Burndown chart is empty — Fix: Tasks must have baseline dates set. Without baselines, IMPACT cannot calculate the ideal completion line.
  • Issue: Statistics do not match what I see in the task list — Fix: Check your filters. The dashboard may be showing all tasks while your task list view has active filters.
