How to manage milestones and deliverables
Last updated: 7 May 2026
What this does
Break a project into milestones (key dates or phases) and deliverables (tangible outputs). Milestones and deliverables help you track progress at a higher level than individual tasks.
Current access and functionality
- Verified against the current
impact-web,impact-client, andimpact-marketplacecode on 2026-05-07. - In
impact-web, users must be signed in and working in an active workspace. Navigation and write actions are role-, permission-, and entitlement-aware; unavailable modules are hidden or disabled instead of being universally visible. - Project creation and management are available to company admins, owners, project coordinators, and project managers according to the permission matrix. Project members may only see assigned or permitted project content.
Before you start
- You must have an existing project.
- You must be the project manager or have edit permissions on the project.
Steps
Creating a milestone
- Open the project and go to the Milestones tab.
- Click Add Milestone.
- Enter a Title and optional Remarks describing what this milestone represents.
- Set the Target Date — this is the deadline for the milestone.
- If this milestone is a billing stage (e.g., a client payment trigger), toggle Billing Stage on and assign a Finance SME to oversee it.
- Click Save.
Creating a deliverable
- Open the project and go to the Deliverables tab.
- Click Add Deliverable.
- Enter the deliverable details (title, description).
- Click Save.
Linking tasks to milestones and deliverables
- When creating or editing a task, select the Milestone and/or Deliverable it belongs to.
- This groups tasks under their milestone, making it easy to see which tasks contribute to each phase.
Tips
- Use milestones for time-based checkpoints (e.g., "Phase 1 Complete by 15 May") and deliverables for output-based goals (e.g., "User Manual Delivered").
- The milestone target date drives auto-scheduling — tasks linked to a milestone will be scheduled to complete before the target date.
- Billing-stage milestones let you tie project progress to invoicing, useful for client projects.
Common issues
- Issue: Milestone shows as overdue but tasks are complete — Fix: Check that all tasks linked to the milestone have their status set to Completed. Partially complete tasks keep the milestone open.
- Issue: Cannot delete a milestone — Fix: Unlink all tasks from the milestone first, then delete it.
